Dearest readers, we all know it- the world will eventually be inherited by preppers as well as the remaining hunter gatherer societies on this planet (haha?). That said, there are times that are not as dramatic or civilization-ending when you really want to have food stocked up just in case. While everyone has slightly different dietary needs, I am willing to share with you my number one food I like to stock up on, as well as criteria that made me pick that food. Also, on sale in my area 2lbs of it were just $1.49. Why am I sharing this? Two reasons. One, all of us feel better if we have just in case supplies stocked up to keep us going for at least a little while if need be. The second reason is that I have not written an article about this yet so it is a fresh topic to discuss for sure. :)
So, dearest readers, here are my criteria. The food has to be chosen whether I like to eat it or not; enough fat and spices will make most food palatable, if not totally enjoyable. Second, it has to be free of gluten, lectins, lactose, and possibly oxalates- you do not want your just in case rations to be incompatible with your body when you need them the most. Next, the food has to be shelf stable for a long time- no canned, frozen or anything else like that. Finally, it needs to have a complete protein in case meat is not available.
Naturally, those of you who know a lot about food and nutrition are already able to guess what I picked. Regardless, here it is. I picked split green peas! I do not particularly love them but I will eat them. They have complete protein, a good amount of fiber and reasonable carb content. Because they are skinless, split peas are free from the defensive chemicals in their skin that can hurt your digestive tract. Finally, they can be turned into blended soup, regular soup, stews and curries, burgers and fritters, protein powder and more. They are shelf stable for many years; the ones I bought have a 2025 expiry date on them but will last beyond that or so I am told. Finally, they are really cheap and easy to stockpile even on a budget. Combined with stuff like potatoes, many different cuts of fresh or canned meat, healthy oils or beef tallow, and a plethora of spices, you got yourself a powerful staple food to keep you going for a while.
I will end it here. What do you like to stockpile in terms of food? Got any ideas to share? Thanks in advance and have a great weekend mwah!
