Dearest readers, there is no doubt in my mind many of you who are trying to stay summer lean have begun to dream of chocolate, or any similar dessert-like solution to the sweets craving endemic to our society :P I don't have a serious sweet tooth per say, but being on a low carb diet long term means that I don't have a crazy amount of variety when it comes to food. Or, so I thought. If you are on a low carb diet and you get tired of the same old meat, salad and omelette - the good news is that there'a lot more that people around the world have come up with- chocolate and desserts being the best of their inventions. Here, I'll explain how I use it to make sure my diet lasts longer without the need for cheat days, and how it benefits my health too in ways beyond the benefits of dieting.
Keto chocolate is not exactly chocolate in the traditional sense (though it tastes even better depending on the recipe you go with). Such chocolates are famous in the low carb world under the name fat bombs. They are called that way because they are often cup or ball shaped and contain a high amount of fat (and fiber, with some protein in the mix as well). The approach is simple and all recipes boil down to the same combinations. You take quality, organic coconut oil, mix it with either peanut butter or almond butter (or cashew etc), add a good amount of premium cocoa powder, and then different kinds of chopped up nuts (typically almonds or walnuts), add stevia until it's sweet enough, pour into paper liners and leave in freezer until they solidify. Voilla, you got yourself some really rich chocolate totally low in carbs, high in fiber and good fats- a perfect snack after or in between meals that really makes a low carb diet more enjoyable.
Why does it work? It works because fats like the ones found in this low carb chocolate don't boost your fasting triglycerides and don't mess with your cholesterol in any bad way. In addition, in healthy individuals fat helps boost energy levels, improve skin joints and tissue, and more. Finally, it continues to force the body to keep producing ketones to feed the brain instead of having it wait for an influx of carbs.
Another reason why these are great is because they have a good amount of fiber from things like almond butter and other nuts people put in these. Fiber is necessary for a feeling of fullness and for your stomach to function well. Incidentally, fiber is usually difficult to get enough of on a low carb diet. These special chocolates help mitigate that issue fairly well.
Now, one thing you might wonder is whether these will kick up your sweets cravings, you ending up eating an entire batch in one sitting. The answer is a strong no. No, you won't. The reason why you won't gorge on these is multi fold. First, they're high in fat and you'll feel full with just one, especially after a major meal. Second, they have fiber which helps you feel more full too. Third, they're made with stevia, not sugar- there's nothing here to cause a blood sugar spike that'll make you crave sweets the way that sugar does it. Finally, these may look like treats but you have to approach them with the mindset that they are food, not an indulgence.
As for links to the recipes, I'm not going to post any because I want you to Google and YouTube them. In doing so, you will find the one that looks best to you. You can thank me later ;)
