Dearest readers, I hope everyone is doing well despite heat waves in some places and and what seem like monsoons in others! I have skipped a few weeks of blog writing as part of my time off but hey, I am back and with a topic that hopefully most of you will enjoy :) Has life seemed disrupted to you for a while now? Some of you would say no shit Sherlock (lol), but hey to you I answer excellent, that is just perfect because it means you did not get used to this so called new normal that we cannot wait to take behind the shed and euthanize! ;) There is something that is making most of us sick besides covid, and that is the fact that our annual cycle is way off- kinda like when you do not sleep properly for a little while, your circadian rhythm becomes messed up and you constantly feel unwell. We can no longer just sense the disturbance in the Force, we can see it everywhere. So, why is this messing us up so much? Let us look at the importance of our annual cycle.
I am sure different parts of USA and Canada have their own versions of the annual cycle, but they all boil down to key components. We have our seasons, and each season has its busy times and long weekends, periods of working hard and then having so much fun on your well earned time off. We have times in the cycle when we call in sick and go away for a few days some place super fun but not too far, and then we have vacation season- some enjoy oceanside sands, others hit the slopes, and everything in between. Hell, even a staycation has its charms. We know what time of the year it is not by looking at a damn calendar, but by what we have to look forwards to as human beings on any given day, week or month. This is very important to human beings as we have been in business of creating order out of chaos and maintaining cycles on an off for hundreds of thousands of years and I am pretty sure that as a species we do not plan on stopping. Some people twist this idea by saying that there is always some power that be in our lives that dangles long weekends and other nice things in front of us so we keep working like cogs in a machine. The reality is that, without an annual cycle that brings us happy moments, times off, something to celebrate, we can just switch off- non action, mass disobedience, and ultimately autophagy. Ever seen a little kid just break down and sit or lay on the floor, refusing to move communicate or do anything? Some people call it a tantrum, I call it human nature at its purest with zero coaching in the mix haha. Very primal.
As a species, we want life on our own terms, we want to create paradise on Earth, but we will shut down eventually if we are pushed away from that path. I have spoken with friends who came to Canada over the years as war refugees, and they said that even when bombs could fall at any moment, or snipers could decide to get trigger happy on innocent civilians, people could and did still go to work, have gatherings, birthdays, long weekends, go to school etc. To many of them, our current situation seems to take a worse toll on the human psyche, our lives and our cycles than a war does. I would not know from personal experience but you can be merely book smart on it and see that they may have a point.
Here is a final point to consider and it is maybe the most important one. If many of us just give up of our annual cycle of good things to look forward to, and our governments keep adding fuel to the fire, many of us will shut down and give up. It is precisely at this point in any society in history- mass self selecting out, apathy and near autophagy- that it clears a path for the most controversial, extreme or seductively devious elements of itself to really, and I mean really mess things up under the guise of change for the better or some sort of salvation. They usually end up replacing the cycle of everything you like and want we a cycle of everything they like and want. Your year becomes their year- every year.
So, what can we do? We have to insist on solutions to this pandemic that will protect our cycle, our way of life. If we have been going through life clubbing around strangers, jumping in tightly packed crowds at concerts, crawling all over each other at the mall on Saturdays or a Vegas casino 365 hazy days in a year, then that is what we must insist on. Think of what we must do to be ourselves, and ask that this is made possible again and soon.
