Dearest readers, hope your week is going well. Here in Toronto, the weather has been extremely kind to us, giving us a taste of spring earlier than expected. Having said that, weather like this makes everyone want to go all out on weekends. Road trip, parties, drinks, food- often too much of it all. Now that I think about it, many people out there live hermit-like lives Monday-Friday, and then catch up on all the fun, life-worth-living activities on the weekend- almost like dogs off leash. I was like that for a long time, but not any more. If you're doing it too but realizing that it's a really bad way to go, let's go over why and what do to different without sacrificing all the fun.
We've all felt it- you work hard all week, maybe overtime too. Work is always full of challenges small and large, and in today's world bosses try to pack more and more duties into a job description and keep the pay exactly the same. On top of that, you may have family, relatives or someone else who needs help and attention. Yet on top of that, there are also personal projects like a side business, diet and exercise efforts, finding someone to date, hobbies... I mean, there are only so many hours in a day and you have to sleep too. So you go on and on and on, and then the weekend comes and you go crazy. You put a week's worth of dining out, drinking, partying and entertainment into those two days. Sounds fun, but it's actually really bad for you. If you want to perform better at work, feel more energized during the week and maintain a diet and workout routine, you cannot possibly pull it off if every weekend you drown in utter hedonism and debauchery :P Now, avoiding both altogether is a bad idea because they're so much fun ;) So, what to do?
I suggest making your Monday-Friday feel a lot better so you don't have to go overboard on the weekends in order to be able to even face the next Monday-Friday cycle. First, embrace the work cycle. You have your job, it is what it is and there's a reason why you're there. Even if you don't like it, embrace your current job. If you want a better one, start looking for it and embrace that too. Make sure you find ways to enjoy your weeknights too. Mix up your workout routines to feel happier and less bored; if you don't like cardio just ramp up your diet so you don't have to run so much on the treadmill every day. Change your workout music playlist every week. Go on at least one coffee date during the week- with someone you already know or someone you're looking to get to know better. If you have shows you watch on certain nights, don't watch them on your laptop with your phone constantly buzzing- watch it on the big screen with the lights dimmed or off, the phone on silent and a drink or two :)
I hope you're starting to catch my drift here, dearest readers. Monday-Friday should not be something you'd rather forget on the weekends in a whirlwind of beer and wings. Do things that make you feel alive on the weeknights, and embrace your duties on the weekdays. This'll have a snowball effect on your well-being. I know it's not easy if you feel busy all the time, but that's what busy is more often than not- a feeling rather than the reality.
